Government Laboratory College was founded in 1961 by Muhammad Osman Gani, the principal of the adjacent Govt. Teachers’ Training College. The school was originally intended to start with classes 3-8, but due to the eagerness of Gani and Khan Muhammad Salek, the first headmaster, classes 1 and 2 were also included. In the first academic year (1961-62), the highest class offered was 8. Class 9 was added the following year, and class 10 the year after that. The school’s first Secondary School Certificate examinations took place in 1964.

Classes are usually divided into four sections, A, B, C, and D, each containing 60-90 students. The students’ day is split into two shifts, morning and day, with two sections studying in each half of the day.

In 2007, due to the admittance of a greater number of meritorious students than there were allotted seats, this system was extended to class 1. This included two extra sections, E and F, and three sections studying during each shift.

Today, Government Laboratory College is one of the most prestigious schools in Bangladesh. It has a long and distinguished history of academic excellence, and its alumni include many prominent figures in Bangladeshi society. The school is committed to providing its students with a high-quality education that will prepare them for success in college and beyond.
